Minecraft Movie Relishes Box Office Triumph Amid Mixed Reviews

Despite lukewarm critical reception, the Minecraft movie rakes in $300 million globally in its opening weekend.

The film, featuring a top-notch cast, outperformed expectations, captivating audiences despite critical concerns.

The much-anticipated Minecraft Movie has surprised the film industry by reporting an impressive global box office take of approximately $300 million (£233 million) during its debut weekend. After facing numerous delays, the film, which premiered on Friday, is based on the immensely popular video game that has captivated millions around the world.

Featuring a star-studded cast including the likes of Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge, initial estimates indicate that its earnings have significantly outpaced the production budget of $150 million. EntTelligence reports that about half of the film's revenues stemmed from North American audiences.

Remarkably, the film has achieved these impressive box office figures despite receiving predominantly mixed reviews. The Telegraph rated the film two stars, lamenting the absence of the original game's charm, while the Guardian was less forgiving, only assigning it a single star and commenting on its 'cobbled-together feel.'

However, moviegoers, particularly families, have turned out in droves to see the film, with Steve Buck, chief strategy officer at EntTelligence, stating it has "definitely overperformed all industry projections." He noted that around a quarter of film attendees were under 13, and a majority were male. "When dads like a family film, that's a good thing," Buck commented to BBC News.

The film marks the largest domestic opening for Warner Bros since 2023 and the most successful of 2025. Minecraft remains one of the best-selling video games to date, with over 300 million copies sold, according to Statista. The film chronicles the adventures of four misfits who unexpectedly find themselves thrust through a mysterious portal into the blocky realm of the Overworld — the starting point for all Minecraft players.

Following a track record of game-to-film adaptations, where many have struggled to resonate with audiences, Minecraft joins the ranks of successful films like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros Movie. Jack Black voiced the anticipation ahead of the movie’s release, acknowledging the pressure to meet fans’ expectations: "This game has been loved by millions and millions all over the world for years now, and I think this movie is a big deal for a lot of people, because now it's generational."
