In a momentous recognition of cultural and philanthropic excellence, outgoing President Joe Biden is set to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a remarkable group of 19 individuals, including fashion luminary Anna Wintour, U2 frontman Bono, and billionaire philanthropist George Soros. This highest civilian honor in the United States celebrates those who have made profound contributions to society and the world, as stated by the White House.

The grand ceremony will take place at the White House on Saturday, showcasing honorees from various fields, including politics, activism, and the arts. Bono, born Paul David Hewson, is lauded for his commitment to social justice, particularly in addressing poverty and supporting HIV/Aids initiatives. Wintour, who has held the role of editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988, has significantly impacted the fashion industry while also championing charitable causes such as Aids research, raising over $20 million.

George Soros, a formidable Democrat donor and philanthropist, joins the list, alongside high-profile figures such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who will receive the award shortly before Biden's transition to the presidency. Notably, Soros has faced adversity throughout his career, including being targeted by political threats during his critique of former President Trump.

The distinguished roster of recipients extends to entertainment legends like Denzel Washington, Michael J. Fox, and sports icon Lionel Messi, as well as retired NBA superstar Earvin "Magic" Johnson and celebrated designer Ralph Lauren. Humanitarian efforts are represented by chef José Andrés, known for his World Central Kitchen initiative that provides food in disaster-stricken areas, while conservationist Jane Goodall and science advocate Bill Nye illustrate the scientific community's influence.

Additionally, the ceremony will honor historical figures posthumously, including former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, ex-Defense Secretary Ash Carter, and civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer.

Established by President John F. Kennedy, the Medal of Freedom is awarded on the president's discretion and is guided by an external advisory panel.
