Frenchman Offers Thieves a Jackpot Share After Credit Card Theft

Man proposes 50/50 split of €500,000 prize from stolen scratch card winnings

In an unusual twist of fate, a French man seeks to cut a deal with the thieves who used his stolen credit card to cash in on a life-changing jackpot, proposing a generous share of the prize.

Toulouse resident Jean-David E has made an intriguing call to two unidentified thieves, offering to share the €500,000 (£413,664) scratch card winnings they obtained illegally using his credit card. In a candid interview with RTL radio, he acknowledged the unusual situation, stating, “Without me, they would not have won, but without them, I would not have bought this ticket.” The unexpected proposal aims to negotiate a split of the prize money before the authorities potentially seize the winnings.

The saga began on February 3 when Jean-David reported the theft of his backpack, which had been left in his car. After blocking his credit card, he discovered unauthorized charges of €52.50 (£43.47) made at Tabac des Thermes, a local corner store. Inquiring at the shop, he learned two men had used his credit card to buy cigarettes and scratch cards, one of which turned out to be the jackpot winner.

Despite their apparent good fortune, the two men are now in a precarious legal situation. The cashier noticed their inability to input the correct PIN when attempting to make purchases, leading to Jean-David contacting the police. Authorities quickly alerted the Française des Jeux (FDJ), the national lottery operator, which is in control of the prize. Should the thieves attempt to claim their winnings, they risk arrest.

As the clock ticks—scratch card prizes must be claimed within 30 days—Jean-David's lawyer, Pierre Debuisson, proposed a peaceful resolution: “This is also a miraculous opportunity for these two men to build a new life for themselves.” Jean-David expressed a genuine willingness to avoid prosecution, championing an amicable solution and emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

He articulated his intent to use his half of the prize money, approximately €250,000 (£206,988), to alleviate his mortgage burden. The police and FDJ have been contacted for further commentary. As this unconventional tale unfolds, it raises questions about morality, chance, and the possibilities of redemption for the reluctant lottery winners.
