Ukrainian Drone Assault Targets Second Russian Oil Refinery in a Week
Ukrainian forces escalate drone strikes, hitting a Lukoil facility in Kstovo as tensions rise.
In a notable escalation of military action, Ukrainian forces have reportedly targeted a second oil refinery in Russia within a week, this time impacting the Lukoil facility in the town of Kstovo. The strike, which took place approximately 800 kilometers from the active conflict zone in eastern Ukraine, involved four drones that inflicted considerable damage to the industrial depot.
Footage shared across various social media platforms depicted towering flames engulfing the facility, raising concerns about the efficacy of Russian air defenses. Gleb Nikitin, the regional governor, confirmed that debris from the drone strikes landed in the industrial area, although he stated there were no immediate reports of injuries or casualties.
In addition to the Kstovo strike, Vasily Anokhin, governor of the Smolensk region, indicated a "massive" drone attack on civilian infrastructure, without confirming any reported casualties. Anokhin mentioned that a drone was intercepted during its approach to a nuclear power station; however, independent verification of these claims by the BBC remains elusive.
The drone assault coincided with tragic events in the Belgorod region, where a mother and her child lost their lives amid a spike in hostilities since the onset of Russia's large-scale invasion in February 2022. Vyacheslav Gladkov, Belgorod's governor, reported additional injuries to another child and his father due to this border region attack.
These events unfolded as part of a broader overnight offensive, wherein Russian authorities claimed to have downed over 100 Ukrainian drones, leading to temporary halts in activities at airports in St. Petersburg and Kazan. The current wave of drone attacks marks one of Ukraine's most significant operations during the ongoing war, and follows a similar attack on another Russian oil refinery that targeted Moscow’s infrastructure just days prior.
The exchanges of drone strikes have prompted Russia to retaliate with its own military actions, causing air alerts across various areas in Ukraine. The Ukrainian military reported having successfully intercepted 29 Russian drones throughout nine regions.
With the third anniversary of Russia's invasion on the horizon, the conflict remains tenuous. While Russian forces continue to make incremental gains in the eastern territories—approaching the strategic city of Pokrovsk—Ukrainian troops maintain control over swaths of land in western Russia's Kursk region, where they executed a rapid offensive in August.
