Tragedy Strikes New Mexico as Flash Flooding Claims Three Lives
Heavy rainfall causes devastating flash floods in Ruidoso, New Mexico, leading to loss of life and property damage.
At least three people have lost their lives in the village of Ruidoso, New Mexico, following severe flash flooding triggered by intense rainfall. The deluge brought approximately 8.8 cm (around 3.5 inches) of rain, resulting in the Ruidoso river swelling to unprecedented levels. Local authorities have confirmed that the floodwaters have since receded.
The deceased include a man and two children who were tragically swept away downstream. According to Kerry Gladden, a spokesperson for the village, search and rescue operations are ongoing, and a dedicated hotline has been established for individuals seeking information about missing loved ones. Emergency services have conducted more than 50 swift water rescues in the devastated area, urging residents to relocate to higher ground for safety.
At least three individuals have been treated for injuries at local medical facilities, Ms. Gladden noted. Disturbing footage shared by local artist Kaitlyn Carpenter on social media captured at least one house succumbing to the floodwaters, while Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford stated they are currently unable to assess the total number of homes lost to the flooding.
On a local radio station, Mayor Crawford commented, "It got ugly really quick,” reflecting the rapid escalation of the situation. The National Weather Service had previously issued warnings about significant flooding risk due to "burn scars" from wildfires that devastated the region in June 2024, making the ground particularly susceptible to flooding.
The ongoing wildfires at the time charred large swathes of land, leading to the destruction of over 100 homes and the loss of two lives. Reports have indicated that the risk of flash floods could persist for up to two years in the aftermath of those wildfires, making such tragic events more likely.
Ruidoso's flash flooding news is released shortly after Texas Governor Greg Abbott provided an update on severe flooding in Southern Texas, where the death toll has reached 109, and numerous individuals remain unaccounted for. As climate change exacerbates extreme weather conditions, the impact on communities must be critically addressed.
