Prithvi Shaw: From Cricket Prodigy to Uncertainty's Edge

Once hailed as the successor to India's batting legends, Prithvi Shaw faces a career crossroads after being left unsold in the IPL auction.

Prithvi Shaw's dazzling rise in cricket took a sharp turn as he went unsold in the IPL auction, showcasing a stark contrast to Rishabh Pant's successful comeback. Once celebrated as cricket's next big thing, Shaw’s career now hangs in the balance due to a series of poor performances and personal challenges.

Prithvi Shaw went unsold in the IPL auction in November, shaking the cricketing community. Last month, Rishabh Pant made headlines by becoming the most expensive player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), signing with the Lucknow SuperGiants for a staggering 27 crore rupees (£2.54m) during the mega auction in Saudi Arabia. However, it was the news of Shaw—Pant's former teammate at the Delhi Capitals—going unsold that drew significant attention. Prominent figures including Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting, who have been closely associated with Shaw during his time with the Capitals, were present at the auction, yet their disinterest was telling.

It’s a striking contrast to the trajectory of Rishabh Pant, who, just nine months earlier faced a career-threatening situation following a horrific car accident that left him with severe injuries. Against all odds, Pant's determination and hard work led him back to international cricket, where he helped secure a T20 World Cup victory for India and delivered stellar performances in the domestic circuit.

In stark contrast, Shaw's career has been on a downward spiral, exacerbated by inconsistent performances throughout IPL 2024, which cost him his place in the playing XI. A succession of low scores during the domestic season resulted in his removal from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team, culminating in the magnified stakes of his rejection at the IPL auction. Once heralded as the 'next big thing' in Indian cricket, the future looks bleak for the now 25-year-old player.

Shaw made headlines early in his career, first capturing attention in November 2013 as a 14-year-old by scoring a staggering 546 runs in a school tournament—the highest in the world for minor cricket at that time. Comparisons to cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar were inevitable, especially since Tendulkar had retired only days prior. Fast-tracked into first-class cricket, Shaw’s performance mirrored that of Tendulkar’s ascent, hitting a century in his debut outings in both the Ranji and Duleep Trophy tournaments.

Shaw debuted for the Test team at just 18 years old against the West Indies, impressively scoring 134 runs off 154 balls. His potential was seen as that of a worthy successor to cricketing greats, yet since then his journey has turned troubling. Six years post-debut, he has only played in a mere four Tests, with an aggregate disastrous in terms of international experience compared to the high hopes that surrounded him.

Injuries, personal struggles, and a lack of consistent form have plagued Shaw's career, leading to a decline that many attribute mostly to his own lifestyle choices rather than mere misfortune. Ricky Ponting, who worked with Shaw as Delhi Capitals' coach, remarked on the limitations of what he could offer in terms of guidance. Former Indian batsman Praveen Amre was more blunt, suggesting that Shaw’s failure to manage the fame and fortune of the IPL has led to his downfall—a path reminiscent of Vinod Kambli’s earlier struggles.

While the IPL offers countless opportunities for young players, it also exposes them to the pitfalls of early success. As Rahul Dravid shared, there’s a pressing need for better mentoring at junior levels to prevent the likes of Shaw from losing their way. With an oversaturated talent pool in Indian cricket, Shaw’s road to redemption looks steep. At 25, time is still on his side, but urgency is needed. Former England captain Kevin Pietersen emphasized that redemption is possible if Shaw surrounds himself with the right support and redirects his commitment to training. The message is clear: his future—in cricket and life—depends on the choices he makes in the coming days.
