King Mohammed VI Advises Moroccans to Forgo Sheep Slaughter for Eid Due to Drought

In a notable shift for Eid al-Adha, Moroccan King Mohammed VI encourages citizens to skip traditional sacrifices amid economic hardship.

As Morocco confronts ongoing economic challenges and a prolonged drought, His Majesty King Mohammed VI has recently advised citizens to reconsider the customary practice of sheep slaughter for the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebration in June. This recommendation comes as many families struggle to afford basic necessities, let alone the expense of purchasing lamb or mutton for one of the most significant religious festivals in Islam.

The King's sentiments were shared in a letter read by the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, which marked a thoughtful acknowledgment of the people's plight. His message emphasized that performing the sacrifice in the current difficult circumstances could harm many, particularly those on limited incomes. "I will perform the Eid sacrifice rite, God willing, on behalf of my people," said the King, reinforcing his commitment to support the welfare of Moroccan families.

Over the past years, Morocco has faced seven consecutive years of drought, coupled with extreme heat linked to climate change, which has had a detrimental impact on agricultural yields. The situation has led to an alarming decline in livestock availability, with recent rainfall figures showing a staggering 53% decrease compared to the 30-year average, according to the agriculture ministry. This environmental crisis has directly contributed to rising food prices, including the cost of meat.

In light of these pressing issues, the King highlighted the importance of balancing religious practices with the current economic realities. He expressed his concern over enabling citizens to engage in their sacred rituals under better circumstances, while also addressing the severe climate and economic challenges that the nation is experiencing. The call to forgo sheep sacrifice this Eid al-Adha marks not only a shift in tradition but also a reflection of the broader struggles faced by Moroccan families during these challenging times.
