The Security Service of Ukraine apprehends a senior intelligence officer on suspicions of acting as a Russian informant.
In a significant development amid the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, a senior member of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has been arrested on suspicions of serving as a Russian informant. While the SBU did not officially name the individual, Ukrainian media reports suggest that he is Col. Dmytro Kozyura, who has been serving as the chief of staff of the agency's anti-terrorism center.
Local reports displayed a dramatic scene of the arrest executed by SBU head Vasyl Malyuk, who was personally involved in the investigation. An official statement revealed at least 14 separate instances in which the accused, described ominously as a "rat", allegedly gathered and transmitted classified information to Russian authorities.
The SBU indicated that the investigation relied heavily on extensive audio and video monitoring, alongside access to the suspect's mobile devices and computers. This development comes in the context of Ukraine's intensified efforts to root out Russian operatives following the full-scale invasion that began in February 2022.
Malyuk, in a video statement on the SBU's website, acknowledged that Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) had recruited the suspect in Vienna back in 2018, but he had remained dormant until his handlers re-established contact in December 2022. Despite these ominous ties, Malyuk expressed confidence in the SBU’s capabilities, emphasizing their success in capturing traitors before they could fulfill their espionage objectives.
"This investigation was part of our self-cleansing process within the agency," Malyuk stated, voicing assurances that any attempts by the enemy to infiltrate the ranks of the SBU would be met with timely detection and apprehension. Furthermore, during the investigation, the SBU utilized disinformation tactics to mislead Moscow about their operational capabilities.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenge Ukraine faces in maintaining internal security as the nation continues to defend itself against Russian aggression. The ramifications of such betrayals unfold as both countries remain engaged in a protracted conflict, fraught with high stakes on both sides.
