Trump's Sentencing Delayed as Prosecutors Propose Post-Presidency Sentence
Prosecutors agree to postpone Donald Trump's sentencing until after his upcoming presidential term.
In an unexpected turn of events, New York prosecutors have expressed support for delaying former President Donald Trump's sentencing, suggesting that it take place after he completes his term starting January 2025. Despite opposing Trump's attempts to overturn his conviction for falsifying business records, the Manhattan district attorney's office told Justice Juan Merchan that all parties should have time to consider their arguments and motions before the scheduled hearing on November 26.
The court has set a new deadline of December 9 for the submissions. Trump, who was found guilty in May on 34 charges related to a hush-money scheme during the 2016 election campaign, is expected to take office again soon, complicating the legal proceedings.
Trump’s legal team is pushing for the conviction to be overturned based on presidential immunity claims; however, prosecutors maintain that Trump's actions were unrelated to any official presidential duties. Given the nearing inauguration, legal experts, including former prosecutors, predict that it's highly unlikely sentencing will proceed as scheduled.
The outcome of this legal battle remains uncertain, as Trump's representatives claimed a "total and definitive victory" following the conviction. Despite the impending new term, Trump's case is one of four criminal cases he is facing, yet it is the only one that has reached a guilty verdict thus far.
