Trump Announces US Delegation to Moscow for Ukraine Ceasefire Negotiations
US officials to meet Russian counterparts for potential ceasefire discussions as the Ukraine conflict continues.
In a move signaling a potential shift in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, President Donald Trump announced that US officials are heading to Moscow to engage in discussions aimed at establishing a ceasefire. This announcement follows a notable agreement by Ukrainian officials to a 30-day ceasefire after crucial talks with American representatives in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking alongside Ireland's Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, Trump indicated that there have been "positive messages" concerning a potential ceasefire, though he emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating: “A positive message means nothing.” Trump did not elaborate on which officials would be part of the delegation, but Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that National Security Secretary Mike Waltz had engaged with his Russian counterpart. Reports suggest that Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is set to lead the team to Moscow post the Jeddah negotiations.
As the Kremlin processes the ceasefire proposal, a possible phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin might occur soon. Trump believes that striking a ceasefire could be beneficial for Russia as well, highlighting that there is a "lot of downside" for them.
Despite these diplomatic moves, the conflict continues unabated, with Russian drone strikes reported in key Ukrainian cities including Kryvyy Rih and Odesa. President Putin was also seen at a military command post in Kursk, reinforcing Russia's ongoing military presence in the region. The situation remains tense, with clashes persisting on the ground even as diplomatic efforts seek to provide a pathway to peace and an end to the violence.
