A six-storey building in Madrid experienced a partial collapse, leading to the tragic deaths of four individuals, including workers from various countries. Authorities are investigating the incident as rescue operations continue.

Four people have died after a six-storey building which was being refurbished partially collapsed in the centre of the Spanish capital, Madrid.

The city's mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, stated that the bodies of the last two of the people reported missing were recovered on Wednesday morning - about 15 hours after the significant collapse occurred at the property on Hileras Street.

Local media indicated that the victims were a 30-year-old Spanish woman, who was managing the renovation project, and three male workers hailing from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50. Additionally, three other individuals sustained injuries during the incident.

This former office block was in the process of being converted into a hotel, prompting the commencement of an official investigation by the authorities.

Emergency services consisting of several teams, along with drones and sniffer dogs, were deployed to search for potential survivors following the collapse on Tuesday.

Initially, two of the bodies were retrieved on Tuesday night. Mayor Martinez-Almeida expressed heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, emphasizing the community's support during this difficult time.

Reports give account of a construction worker who witnessed the collapse. He shared that he was outside pumping concrete into the lower floors when he noticed an impending collapse and fled upon seeing a large cloud of dust.

Interestingly, while the building's internal structure failed, its façade remained intact. The developer, Rehbilita, had advertised the building as undergoing a comprehensive renovation aimed at transforming it into a four-star hotel.
