Tragedy in Madrid: Four Lives Lost in Building Collapse
Four people have died after a six-storey building which was being refurbished partially collapsed in the centre of the Spanish capital, Madrid.
The city's mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, said the bodies of the last two of the people reported missing were recovered on Wednesday morning - some 15 hours after several floors at the property on Hileras Street collapsed.
Local media said the victims were a 30-year-old Spanish woman managing the project, along with three male workers hailing from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50. Three other individuals sustained injuries in the incident.
The former office block was in the process of being converted into a hotel when the tragedy occurred. Authorities have subsequently launched an investigation.
Spanish emergency services reported deploying multiple crews utilizing drones and sniffer dogs to search for those missing after Tuesday's collapse. Two of the deceased were recovered on Tuesday night.
All our love and support go to their families, friends, and colleagues in this very difficult time, expressed Martinez-Almeida on social media.
A construction worker at the site recounted the horrifying moment of the collapse, stating he was pumping concrete into lower floors when he witnessed a massive cloud of dust and promptly fled the scene.
Despite the internal structure's failure, the building's façade remained intact. The renovations were being undertaken by the company Rehbila, which had described the project as a comprehensive transformation into a four-star hotel.
