Derrick Groves, the last remaining fugitive from a May jailbreak in New Orleans, has been apprehended by U.S. Marshals after nearly five months on the run. His capture highlights the challenges and consequences of one of the largest jailbreaks in recent history.
ATLANTA (AP) — The only escaped Louisiana inmate who remained on the run following an audacious May jailbreak in which 10 men crawled through a hole behind a toilet has been found in Atlanta, according to the U.S. Marshals. Derrick Groves was taken into custody at a location after eluding authorities for nearly five months, confirmed Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair. Groves, 28, had been convicted of murder before the jailbreak and faced a possible life sentence. Authorities had offered a $50,000 reward for his recapture.
The dramatic escape occurred on May 16 when Groves and nine others broke free from a New Orleans jail. The group exploited delays in security protocols, exploiting lapses that included a guard seeking food. Following the escape, an investigation indicated the possibility of inside assistance, with a maintenance worker arrested for allegedly aiding the jailbreak.
Groves’ mother, Stephanie Groves, expressed her concern and emotional turmoil upon hearing news of her son’s capture through media outlets. She called for his peaceful surrender but admitted feeling unsettled, reflecting on the turmoil endured by her family during his time on the run.
With Groves' arrest, law enforcement officials continue to address the systemic issues that allowed such a major prison break to occur, as all ten escapees are now facing additional charges. The other nine had been quickly apprehended, showing the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts to chase down fugitives. Groves remains in custody and awaits further legal proceedings.
