Critical Helicopter Crash on Sacramento Highway Injures Three
A medical helicopter crashed on a busy highway in Sacramento, critically injuring three individuals aboard, including a woman who was pinned underneath. Bystanders, alongside a small fire department crew, helped lift the aircraft to rescue her.
The REACH Air Medical helicopter was returning after a patient transfer when it encountered an in-flight emergency just after 7 p.m. on Monday. Captain Justin Sylvia from the Sacramento Fire Department reported that the helicopter flipped upside down, creating a significant debris field.
The pilot, a nurse, and a paramedic were subsequently taken to local hospitals and are in critical condition. Remarkably, no injuries were reported among motorists, a fact that Sylvia described as mind blowing given the crash's location.
Witnesses described seeing the helicopter descending rapidly, prompting nearby vehicles to slow down. It took every ounce of all approximately 15 people to move that aircraft up just enough to get her out, Sylvia remarked.
Fortunately, the helicopter did not catch fire during the incident, which caused the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 to shut down. The investigation into the crash's cause is ongoing, and REACH Air Medical has expressed concern for the injured crew as they assess the situation.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a long line of traffic backed up behind the downed helicopter, while Sacramento City Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan, who was on a ride along with responding law enforcement, noted the sobering nature of the incident, highlighting the risks faced by medics and law enforcement every day.
