Jonathan Rinderknecht faces charges for allegedly igniting a fire that caused historic destruction in Pacific Palisades, resulting in 12 fatalities and thousands of property damage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities in California have charged a 29-year-old man with igniting a fire that turned into the most destructive blaze in Los Angeles history, destroying much of the Pacific Palisades neighborhood.

Jonathan Rinderknecht is accused of starting a fire on January 1 that was initially extinguished but reignited days later, fueled by high winds. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli shared the details during a Wednesday news conference, revealing that Rinderknecht fled the scene but returned to watch the fire burn.

The devastating fire erupted on January 7, resulting in 12 fatalities and the incineration of over 6,000 homes and buildings in the affluent coastal region. Rinderknecht, who was arrested in Florida, is expected to appear in court following his apprehension.

According to the investigation, the fire originated from a lighter igniting vegetation or paper. Rinderknecht misled authorities about his whereabouts during interviews. Further inquiries excluded other potential causes like fireworks and lightning.

The community is still reeling from the dual disasters, as another fire, the Eaton Fire, claimed 18 lives on the same day. An official review cited insufficient resources and outdated policies for delayed emergency responses, further complicating the already catastrophic situation.
